Sample Statement: (From 2006 Recipient- Jessica Lewis)
My name is Jessica Lewis and I am currently a senior at Weaver High School, Hartford, CT. I was born and raised in Hartford, CT by my mother. I have three brothers, making me the only girl. One of my brothers is currently a student at Eastern Connecticut State University. My mother has always emphasized the importance of education, especially higher education. I have participated in two sports at Weaver. They are basketball and volleyball. I really enjoyed them both and I believe they have helped to teach me self-discipline, leadership and team building skills. The sport I enjoy the most is basketball because I am very competitive and truly enjoy a challenge. My leadership skills have helped me in securing the position of captain on the varsity basketball team for two years. I have been playing varsity for three years.
Throughout high school I have done many community service activities. I tutored elementary school students and assisted them with their homework. This helped me get a feel for what teachers do and how hard their job can be. My best experience was when I was selected to teach a kindergarten class for a whole day. I learned that being a kindergarten teacher is a lot of work and it isn't as easy as it seems. This was a great experience for me. It gave me the chance to develop a lesson plan and see first hand how important a job of a teacher really is. Also, I helped to coach an elementary basketball team all year around. Being a coach comes with a lot of responsibility. What being a coach taught me was a lot of patience because when you're working with kids; patience is the first thing that you must have. The thing I liked the most about working with kids was just seeing a smile on their face and knowing that they are happy and when they're happy it makes me feel like I accomplished something that day. I also participated in several committees; first the Human Relations club and then the National Urban League Incentives to Excel and Succeed program (N.U.L.I.T.E.S). I enjoy being a part of the Human Relations club because we conduct a lot of community service projects. We assist at local shelters at holiday times while making and serving dinners. I felt good while working in a shelter because it made me feel like I changed the world and it gave me the feeling that I just made someone's life a little bit better. We also organized a school-wide blood drive. This gave us the opportunity to donate blood to someone that was in need. I also participate in Jobs for America's Graduates (J.A.G); this program teaches the fundamentals of college preparation and employment.
I plan on attending a four-year university where I can major in psychology. After graduation, I want to pursue a career as a psychologist because I love working with kids and I want to contribute to the world in some way. As I see it, my life is just beginning. I plan on being a great asset to the world.
Send all of the above to:

I graduated from Warner Robins High School in Warner Robbins, Georgia. I plan to attend Macon State College in Macon, Georgia where I want to obtain a degree in nursing. OXFORD SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS, 2008
There are five Oxford Scholarship recipients for 2008, they are Kevin Brown, Lajuan Brunson, Tameka Nicole Hall, Amanzie Jenkins II, and Shaquaveanika “Nika” Ware. Each scholarship recipient will receive a $500 stipend and a certificate. Best wishes to all of them as they pursue their post-high school goals. We ask the family to keep them in their prayers. Below are the essays submitted by the students, to introduce themselves.
Kevin Brown My name is Kevin Brown and I am the son of Steven and Sandra Brown of Bloomfield, Connecticut. My grandparents are the late Robert Carter and Mrs. Winifred Carter. I am in the senior class of Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, CT. My favorite class in high school is the automotive class. Since becoming a freshman in high school, I have taken all three automotive courses, Auto 1 as a freshman, Auto II as a sophomore, and Auto III as a junior. Since I could not repeat the classes for my senior year, I have volunteered to help with other automotive students. Since my junior year at the high school, I have been participating in sports by playing volleyball. Even though I was a junior and a first year player at the time, I found myself subbing in for varsity players after four games in the season, which helped build my teamwork skills and sped up both my thinking and reaction time. During my senior year, I found myself starting for the varsity team and realized that my competitiveness had grown with my skills. I maintained a positive attitude and encouraged my teammates to do better. When I was not playing on the court, I was volunteering my time to help manage the girls' volleyball team during their season, which has helped me become more responsible.
Through two of my summer vacations of my four years of high school, I volunteered to be in a program at Social Youth Services called C.I.T. (Counselors In Training). This program was about helping to look after kids in different camps younger than myself and others in the C.I.T. program. These camps included "Kiddie Kamp" (children ranging from ages 5 to 7 years old), "789 Camp" (ages 7 to 9 years old), and "Total Rec" (ages 10 to 12 years old). Working with these kids has taught me a lot about patience. Also, during the summer before my senior year, I performed community service for my school along with one of my friends. Together, we worked in Bloomfield High School's library. We shelved books, cleaned up tables, counters, and shelves, and assisted the librarians with paperwork. At the end of the summer, my friend and I had completed over 40 hours of community service. During my junior and senior I helped create a program which involved building an electric car to compete in an actual race on a track in Limerock Park, located in Connecticut. While being involved with this project, I was one of the supervisors to make sure all of the right adjustments were made, and I also assisted in welding the car together.
I plan to go to a technical school called UTI (Universal Technical Institute). I want to study both auto mechanics and electronics, which are my passions. After graduation, I plan to work with a major car company to expand my knowledge of both cars and electronics with the company's vast technology. I plan on becoming a great automotive engineer and help others with their problems.
Thank you for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship.

After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to go on to Medical School to become a hematologist, then eventually a Pediatric Neurological Surgeon. I have wanted to be a doctor since I was two years old. The Mance and Sarah Oxford Scholarship would be of great assistance to me in the pursuit of my dream of becoming a doctor. Winter J. Oxford My name is Winter Jasmine Oxford. I am currently a senior attending Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas, CA. I am seventeen years old and I have a fourteen-year-old sister named Jenna. She is a freshman this year attending the same school. Our mom, Tina, has raised us. Our father is Willie James Oxford. He currently lives in Dawson, Georgia. My dad, Willie, is the youngest son of the late Annie Lee (Gammage) and Adolphus Oxford, Sr. My mom always thought it was important to keep connected to our family back in Georgia. So my sister and I have visited with my dad and his side of the family during our summers whenever it was financially possible. I enjoy sports and have played basketball for 4 years; the last three years I was the captain of the varsity team. I also played both varsity volleyball, and track and field. I've held the level of corporal in the Monterey County Sheriff's Explorers for over 4 years. I am currently involved in my school's Spanish Club and Black Student Union. Through my participation in team sports I've learned self-discipline, respect and an appreciation for other people's gifts and talents. I've found I am a leader and an example to my team, my friends and my family. Team sports have taught me responsibility and commitment in regards to both my family and my community. My mom has always stressed the importance of a higher education. It has always been a given that I would continue my education to a university level. That opportunity is here. I have been accepted and am planning on attending the California State University of Sacramento. Although I am going into my school undeclared, I will most likely major in business and minor in marketing. Should the opportunity arise, I would like to continue playing both volleyball and basketball in college. Before I close this letter, I would like to say that I am truly proud to be in a family that has been able to trace their family roots back as far as we have. When I have mentioned to others that my family has a website (not to mention a scholarship program), they have expressed how fortunate I am.
